As the two main members of optical network access, EPON and GPON have their own advantages and values. Here is the comparison of them in various aspects.
Data rate
EPON is with fixed upload and download rate, 1.25Gbps, using line coding. But the actual data rate is 1Gbps.
GPON supports multiple rate levels, and can support upload-and-download asymmetric rate. Download rate is 2.5Gbps or 1.25Gbps, while upload rate is 1.25Gbps or 622Mbps. We need to choose the exact optical transceivers according to the actual need of upload and download rates.
Conclusion: GPON is better than EPON.
Split Ratio
Split ratio means that how many ONUs (USERs) one OLT port carry.
Split ratio of EPON: 1:32
Split ratio of GPON: 1:32, 1:64, 1:128
Indeed, EPON sisteym can also achieve higher split ratio technically, such as 1:64, 1:128. The EPON control protocol can support more ONUs.
Split ratio is mainly limited by the performance specifications of the optical module. Large split ratio will cause much higher cost of optical modules. Moreover, the PON insertion loss is 15dB~18dB. Large aplit ratio will reduces transmission distance.
Conclusion: GPON can offer multiple options, but has not advantages in cost.
Max Transmission
When split ratio 1:16, GPON system can support the max transmission distance 20km; when split ratio is 1:32, GPON can support max transmission distance 10km.
EPON is the same with GPON.
OAM Operation & Maintenence
EPON does not take too much into account of OAM, just simple define the remote fault indication, loopback and link monitoring for ONT. And it is optional support.
GPON defines PLOAM (Physical Layer OAM) at the physical layer, and OMCI (ONT Management and Control Interface) is defined at the upper layer to perform OAM management on multiple layers. PLOAM is used to implement data encryption, status detection, error detection and other functions. The OMCI channel protocol is used to manage the services defined by the upper layer, including the function parameter of the ONU, the type and quantity of the T-CONT service, the QoS parameters, the request configuration information and the performance statistics, and running events of automatically notify the system, to implement the configuration and fault diagnostic, performance and safety management of the OLT to the ONT.
Conclusion: GPON is better than EPON.
Conclusion:
EPON and GPON have their own advantages. GPON is better than EPON on performance indicators. However, EPON has the advantages on time and cost. GPON is catching up. For the customers that have high demand on bandwidth, multi-services, QoS and safety, and need ATM tochnology as backbone, GPON will be the best choose. For customers with low demand of cost, QoS and safety, EPON is better for them.
